Weather warnings for thunderstorms

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms which affect the Scottish Borders.

Today's warning

  • Warning area covers almost the whole of the Scottish Borders - only Newcastleton and Yetholm areas not included
  • Warning runs from 2pm to 11.59pm
  • Most areas will remain dry, but isolated/scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms could develop, bringing up to 30mm of rain in less than an hour
  • Where an area is repeatedly affected in excess of 50mm of rain is possible
  • Risk of surface water flooding

  • Tomorrow's warning

  • Warning area covers almost all the area, the exception being the Yetholm area
  • Warning runs from 12midnight tonight to 10pm on Thursday
  • Heavy showers and thunderstorms may develop overnight and into the early hours, perhaps merging into larger areas of rain
  • Where downpours happen, up to 40mm of rain possible over a short period
  • Further scattered and slow moving heavy showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening, bringing up to 60mm of rain in an hour
  • Risk of surface water flooding
